Amapiano music has become synonymous with the modern day South African dance and electronic music scene. These infectious afrobeat grooves found their roots in the Soweto township of Johannesburg, South Africa which is also home to the genre’s predecessor Kwaito music. An eclectic mix of deep house, jazz, afrobeats, hip hop, and soul music, Amapiano places itself firmly rooted in sounds of the past while steadily pushing towards the future. Over the past few years the genre has migrated from bedroom studios to clubs around South Africa and now the world. Amapiano has crossed borders to reach our ears thanks to a worldwide hit: “Jerusalema”. A trend with many facets and a rich history, the genre is made for dancing and is among one of the latest innovations in electronic music.
